PRODUCING WORKSHOP

In this Producing Workshop we will teach you all the principles about self-producing your performance: how to source and booking theatres, organizing production timelines, scheduling rehearsals and performances, how to recruit other professionals for your team and write contracts, hiring a PR, set up ticket prices and run your marketing.

FOCUS OF THE WORKSHOP:

  • Principles about self-producing your performance: 

    • Organizing production timelines.

    • Scheduling rehearsals and performances.

    • Sourcing materials and props.

  • Hiring professionals for your team:

    • Negotiating and writing contracts (understanding of union agreements such as ITC, Equity, and fair rate to pay professionals).

    • Sample of contracts.

  • Touring:

    • Developing new partnerships, with venues, festivals & artists across the UK and internationally.

    • Organizing flights, accommodation for touring.

  • Finance:

    • How to write and oversee a budget for the performance.

    • Control, monitor and close the project budget.

  • Box office:

    • How to set up a ticket price.

    • How to liaise with box office and ticket sales.

  • Marketing:

    • How to market your production.

    • Hiring a PR.

THE TEACHER

The session is led by the producer Ellen Spence.

Ellen Spence is a freelance producer. Recent credits and projects include Fuck You Pay Me 2018 (People’s Choice Award, Vault Festival / Wiltons Music Hall Edinburgh Award) and CanadaHub Edinburgh 2017 & 2018 (Assistant Producer - participating productions won three Fringe First Awards, two Herald Angel Awards and a Stage award over 2 years). She has also worked as fundraising and development manager for Brainchild Festival (Aim Award; Best Independent Festival 2015, 2016), helping them to raise £50k+ to transform their organisation and ensure long term sustainability. Ellen is founder of queer party HEY QT and a long time trustee of Edinburgh based arts charity The Forest.

PRICES

We currently run workshops for half a day, full day or a week long masterclasses. Prices start at £400 + practitioners’ expenses (travel, per diems and accommodation if required).
